TORRANCE - No. 4 El Camino College is headed to the 3C2A State Championships after recording victories over No. 12 Irvine Valley and No. 5 Long Beach City on Tuesday afternoon in the 3C2A SoCal Regionals at the ECC Sand Courts.
The Warriors opened the day with a 4-1 win over the Orange Empire Conference champion Lasers, dropping only the No. 4 contest. They clinched the win quickly as the No. 1, 3 and 5 games all went to the Warriors for a 3-0 advantage, securing the win.
The No. 5 Vikings then downed the Lasers 3-2 to set up a winner-take-all match between the SCC co-champions.
The Vikings held a 2-1 lead before the Warriors tied it by taking the match on the No. 3 court to tie things up. The entire contingent then flocked to the No. 1 match as the Vikings were holding on to a narrow lead in the second set.
But 2024 SCC Pairs Champions Ryan D'Angelo and Bridget Dorr mounted a comeback and took a 21-20 lead. Dorr had a swing to clinch the match but the ball went into the net to tie things up at 21-21. The Warriors would get one more match point and this time cashed it in as D'Angelo's swing clipped the top of the net and fell onto the sand on the Vikings side for the victory.
The Warriors will now head to the 3C2A State Championships on Thursday, May 9 at West Valley College. It will be the third trip to the state championships for ECC. They finished third overall in 2019 and tied for fifth in 2022.
