North teams show strength in this week's State Women's Volleyball Top 25
While SoCal's San Diego Mesa remains in the #1 position, the North region occupies the next five places on this week's CCCWVCA State Top 25 Rankings.
At #5, Feather River won the annual Delta Classic title in a finals sweep over previously undefeated and still #2 San Joaquin Delta. American River (#3), Sierra (#4), and Fresno City (#6) join the North contingent.
Just five teams are still undefeated and all from the South in Mesa (6-0), new #7 Long Beach City (5-0), #15 LA Mission (9-0), and unranked Allan Hancock (5-0) and Santiago Canyon (2-0).
Taft has the most victories of any team with 11 while LA Mission won the 8-team, own hosted 3rd Eagle Invitational.
Three new teams--all from the North--joined the Top 25 this week.
- SAN DIEGO MESA, Pacific Coast Athletic, 6-0: The Olympians kept pace with victories over Santa Monica in four (first set loss since last year's SoCal Regionals, Round 2) and Canyons, a sweep. Halen Kiefer was a State Player of the Week #3. SoCal: #1; Last Week's State Rank: #1
- SAN JOAQUIN DELTA, Big 8, 9-1: The Mustangs had their 9-match win streak stopped by Feather River in the Delta Classic final in a sweep after their 2023 All-American setter Caprisa Brock had to leave that match early due to an injury. Emily Vickers was selected a State Player of the Week and selected along with teammate Kyra Saiers as All-Delta Classic Tournament. NorCal #1; Last Week's State Rank: #2
- AMERICAN RIVER, Big 8, 8-1: The Beavers saw a 6-match win streak broken in a 4-set loss to Delta, then placed third at the Delta Classic by getting past Fresno in a 5-set thriller (15-11). Earlier, ARC edged San Mateo in five (15-12), rallying from down 2-0 to pull it out. All-Tournament choice Morgan Castaneda blasted 61 kills in four matches. NorCal #2; Last Week's State Rank: #3
- SIERRA, Big 8, Big 8, 10-2: The Wolverines lost to Fresno in four but went 3-1 for fifth place at the Delta Classic. Sierra still has two wins over Feather River and a win over Grossmont as part of its body of work thus far this season. Jordyn Deter totaled 159 set assists, 39 digs, 15 aces, and 15 kills in a superb all-around performance. NorCal: #3; Last Week's State Rank: #4
- FEATHER RIVER, Golden Valley, 10-4: The Golden Eagles go 4-0 to capture the Delta Classic championship behind the MVP performance of State Player of the Week Chloe Albiez. Maya Cann and Lucy Ryan also were All-Delta Classic. Feather River surprised Delta in three in the finals, beat Fresno in four, but needed five to hang on for a win v. West Valley (16-14). - FRESNO CITY, Central Valley, 7-3: The Rams took fourth at the Delta Classic, going 2-2, including a 4-set win over Sierra. They lost in a close four to Feather River (29-27 fourth set) and settled for a 5-set defeat v. ARC despite outscoring the Beavers, 110-103. Setter Savanna FauntLeRoy was All-Delta Classic Tournament after logging 139 assists, 66 digs and 12 aces. FCC moves up one slot. NorCal #5; Last Week's State Rank: #7
- LONG BEACH CITY, South Coast South, 5-0: The Vikings used a shocker sweep over Grossmont and a sweep over Golden West (plus an earlier 5-set win over Moorpark) to bolt on to the top 10. Tainea Allen pounded 14 kills (hit .400) in the win over Grossmont. LBCC jumps four spots. SoCal #2; Last Week's State Rank: #11
- GROSSMONT, Pacific Coast Athletic, 5-4: The Griffins rebounded from being swept by Long Beach in winning a 5-set marathon v. Mt. San Antonio (17-15) and beating Moorpark in four. Grossmont can make a case to be higher with earlier wins this year v. #5 Feather River and #6 Fresno, but they also lost to Pasadena City in three. Kaylin Scott recorded a triple-double v. Mt. SAC with 14 kills, 17 set assists and 12 digs. The Griffins slide three spaces. SoCal #3; Last Week's State Rank: #5
- MOORPARK, Western State North, 5-2: The Raiders battled past Pasadena in five, lost to Grossmont in four, then swept Mt. San Antonio last week, and its only other loss was in five to Long Beach. Alesia Thomas destroyed the ball for 65 kills in the three matches, including an impressive seven kills in the fifth set alone to will her squad over PCC (15-10). MC flies on to the top 10 with a 7-spot leap. SoCal #4; Last Week's State Rank: #16
- MT. SAN ANTONIO, South Coast North, 6-3: The Mounties swept Glendale then lost a 5-set, heartbreaker v. Grossmont (outscored Griffins, 112-111) and were swept by Moorpark. Candace Ceballos totaled 10 kills, 24 digs and 10 aces combined v. Glendale and Grossmont. Mt. SAC falls two slots. SoCal: #5; Last Week's State Rank:#8
- BAKERSFIELD, Western State South, 4-4: The Renegades defeated MiraCosta and Irvine Valley in four each last week. Alexandra Watts knocked down 30 kills with seven blocks, hitting an efficient .446. Bakersfield takes a short one step drop. SoCal #6; Last Week's State Rank: #10
- ORANGE COAST, Orange Empire, 5-1: The Pirates went 3-0 for the week with a 4-set win over El Camino and sweeps over Glendale and Desert. OCC has won five straight with its only loss in five to Long Beach. Taylor Brandley collected 13 kills and 18 digs in the ECC victory. SoCal #7; Last Week's State Rank: #12
- SAN MATEO, Coast South, 3-3: The Bulldogs finished 2-2 at the Delta Classic with a 4-set win over Solano, a close 5-set loss to American River and a 4-set defeat v. Sierra. Faith Crouch totaled 50 kills at the tourney. CSM climbs a spot. NorCal #6; Last Week's State Rank: #14
- SOLANO, Bay Valley, 7-3: The Falcons were 2-2 at the Delta Classic, defeating Sequoias in four and outlasting West Valley in five (15-12) while holding its own in a 4-set loss to San Mateo. Jada Cuffie had 36 kills and 10 blocks in four matches. Solano slips one slot. NorCal #7; Last Week's State Rank: #13
- LA MISSION, Western State North, 9-0: The Eagles won their annual Invitational title and recorded sweeps over East Los Angeles and then Santa Monica in the finals. Early in the week, LAM defeated Cerritos in five. Tawnie Ohrt was MVP of the tournament and slammed 15 kills v. Cerritos. SoCal #8; Last Week's State Rank: #15
- SANTA MONICA, Western State South, 4-3: The Corsairs are a rare squad to take a set from SD Mesa, losing in four sets, then swept Imperial Valley and Cypress before being swept by LA Mission in the Eagle Invitational final. SMC played without its injured top hitter Nicole Lankton (18 kills v. Mesa, hit .400) in that title match. SMC builds some street cred and go up three spaces. SoCal #9; Last Week's State Rank: #19
- SANTA BARBARA CITY, Western State North, 7-1: The Vaqueros have won six in a row, including a 5-set triumph over Irvine Valley (15-11) and a sweep over MiraCosta. Valeria Bellodas made 37 digs and served four aces in the IVC win. A one spot jump for SBCC. SoCal #10; Last Week's State Rank: #18
- TAFT, Central Valley, 11-1: The Cougars went 4-0 for the week with a 5-set win over Ohlone, a 4-set triumph over Shasta and sweeps of Cosumnes River and Sacramento City. - PASADENA CITY, South Coast North, 4-6: The Lancers finally snapped a 6-match losing streak in defeating San Bernardino Valley in four, but lost a 5-set thriller v. Moorpark, then got upset in a 4-set affair v. Mt. San Jacinto. Juyeon Lee subbed in at libero and made 23 digs combined at the PCC Quad v. SBVC and MSJC. The Lancers took a free fall 10 spots. - CERRITOS, South Coast South, 4-1: The Falcons pushed LA Mission to five (15-7) in their first loss, then beat an improved Palomar team in five (15-4). Monserrat Rodriguez scored 29 kills with 26 digs in the two contests. Cerritos shuffled up a rank. SoCal #12; Last Week's State Rank: #21
- SHASTA, Golden Valley, 7-3: The Knights are having one of their best starts in a long time as they bolt their way on to the Top 25. They went 3-1 at the Delta Classic, including 4-set wins over Sequoias and Santa Rosa, and had a 5-set win earlier in the week v. Cosumnes River. Madelyn Frick totaled 66 kills (28 v. SRJC), 49 digs, and 11 aces in the last three wins at Delta. NorCal #9; Last Week's State Rank: Unranked
- PALOMAR, Pacific Coast Athletic, 4-1: The Comets swept Santa Ana, then had their 4-match win streak toppled by Cerritos in five. Janell Spires had a monster double-double on 24 kills and 20 digs in the Falcons loss. SoCal #13; Last Week's State Rank: #22
- COALINGA, Central Valley, 7-1: The Falcons are red hot as they went 4-0 for the week, are on a 6-match win string, and fought their way on the Top 25. Coalinga beat Ohlone in four, then swept Los Medanos, Folsom Lake, and Modesto. Coalilnga's one loss is to Hartnell. Zoe Ruskofsky powered 51 kills, made 52 digs and landed 15 aces (eight v. - SEQUOIAS, Central Valley, 8-4: The Giants had a 4-2 week, going 2-2 at the Delta Classic. They beat Butte in five (16-14), and had 4-set wins over Modesto, Cuesta and Cabrillo. COS suffered 4-set defeats v. both Solano and Shasta. Sequoias falls seven slots. Vianka Martinez totaled 48 kills and 33 digs in the first three matches at Delta. - SANTA ROSA, Big 8, 7-4: The Bear Cubs pushed through a crowd of teams and grab the final spot on the Top 25. They went 2-2 at the Delta Classic, including a 5-set win over Hartnell (15-11) while being swept by Fresno and losing in four to Shasta (1-2 v. the Knights this year).
