Carrying a "modern day" school record eight match winning streak, state No. 21 ranked College of San Mateo's women's volleyball team faces its toughest challenge of the season Wednesday in a first place showdown with visiting Cabrillo College at 6:30 p.m.
CSM (15-4) is 2-0 in Coast North play, along with state No. 7 Hartnell (16-2). State No. 5 Cabrillo (14-2), a recent state champion, leads the league at 4-0 and is arguably Northern California top team. Cabrillo gave Coast South leader and No. 2-ranked Gavilan (17-1) its only season loss – in straight sets.
The Coast North is easily the strongest of the state's 14 conferences, with four teams ranked in the state top 25 – plus four other strong teams in the Coast South. Gavilan, Cabrillo, and No. 7 Hartnell (16-2) are Northern California's top three teams.
CSM also hosts district rival Skyline (4-7, 0-2) on Friday (Oct. 12) at 6:30 p.m.
Last week the Bulldogs surpassed the 6-game streak they had to start their first season back, in 2016, sweeping San Jose City College on Wednesday and City College of San Francisco on Friday.
Bri Tellier had 32 assists and Hannah Gamez had 12 kills in the 25-11, 25-14, 25-7 win at San Jose.
In the 25-8, 25-14, 25-17 romp over visiting CCSF on Friday, Honoria Aguilar had 12 digs and Grace Willming had eleven. Gamez tallied 16 kills and Tellier added 33 assists.
STAT LEADERS:
Gamez ranks No. 6 in the state in season kills with 219 (3.42 per set).
Aguilar is No. 13 in digs with 240 (a 3.89 average).
Willming has 177 kills, No. 4 in the Coast North.
Fallon Evans is No. 3 in the Coast North in assists per set at 8.05 (a 298 season total) but has missed recent matches with an injury.
Tellier is No. 6 in the Coast North in total assists (290) and No. 5 in assists per set (6.90).
