COM men's hoops falls in CCSF tourney final
SAN FRANCISCO >> After two grueling wins, the College of Marin men's basketball team couldn't keep pace with Mt. San Antonio College in Sunday's championship game of the CCSF Tip-Off Classic.
The Mariners (2-1) hung around early, but ended up falling 74-49 in the weekend final. Lucas Chavez, a Drake High grad, led COM with 14 points and four 3-pointers. George Johnson added 10 points but the Mariners, playing short-handed, could not hang with one of the state's top junior college squads.
"I think we ran out of gas tonight. We wanted to win the championship, but I'm proud of what we did the first two games," said coach Dave Granucci, whose club started the tourney with wins over host CCSF (92-70) and San Diego City College (68-58).
"Our guards logged a lot of minutes, playing pressure last night and again against pressure tonight," he added. "It was a grind but our guys are resilient. We understand the big picture. We have a lot to build on and I think we opened up a lot of eyes.
In COM's win over San Diego CC on Saturday, Pierre Carter scored 17 points and Drake grad Brandon Kenilvort grabbed 10 rebounds.
The Mariners return to the court on Nov. 22 at West Valley College, before taking on Santa Rosa Junior College in their Dec. 4 home opener.
