Reedley College men's basketball took advantage of late turnovers and missed free throw attempts by Porterville, and the Tigers pulled out a 64-61 home victory on Jan. 18.
Sophomore Kyle Smith knocked down two late shots to help lift the Tigers. Smith hit one shot and the foul, then added one 3-pointer to help finish with 10 points.
"I just came back in from sitting for awhile. I wanted to make a play. Coach told me you can get a basket against these guys. So I listened to him and went to the basket," Smith said. "That 3-pointer and the free throws were pretty clutch to win the game."
The Tigers went 26-of-31 on free throw attempts. Porterville was 7-of-26 from the line and finished with a 26.9 percentage. Porterville also turned the ball over 16 times. Smith said he and the Tigers were aware of Porterville's weaknesses.
"We knew it coming in because they like to play an up-tempo style of game and that can cause turnovers," Smith said. "They weren't too hot with their free throws either."
RC had a 9-8 overall record and 3-1 mark in the Central Valley Conference as of Jan. 21.
Other scorers: Andre Frazier, 17. Eddie Ramirez, 12. Allston Moore, 6. Demetri Randolph, 5. Walter Orr, 5. Matt Pigg, 4. Craig Simpson, 3. Brian Ying, 2.
Blocks: Frazier, two. Smith, two. Randolph, one. Ramirez, one.
Editor's note: The Tigers played in a first place battle in the CVC at Fresno City College on Wednesday, Jan. 22. The game occurred past The Exponent's deadline.
