OROVILLE - In what could go down as the game of the year, the American River College Football program came back from a 14-point deficit in the fourth quarter to defeat formerly undefeated #2 ranked Butte College on the road on Saturday. With the win the Beavers move to 2-0 in conference.
The Beavers fell behind 7-0 early in the game after Butte scored on a 1-yard touchdown run. In the second quarter, the Beavers responded with a 38-yard Cameron Smith field goal and a 2-yard touchdown run by Elias Brown to take a 10-7 lead. Unfortunately, the lead was short-lived after Butte scored on a 29-yard touchdown pass and 95-yard interception return for a touchdown to take a 21-10 lead into halftime.
In the third quarter Butte would expand their lead to 24-10 converting a 41-yard field goal. However, the Beavers would respond with a fourth quarter for the ages. The Beavers defense would hold Butte scoreless in the fourth quarter, while the Beaver offense would score on a 9-yard touchdown pass connection from Jett Harris to Luis Torres and a 6-yard touchdown run by Elias Brown to send the game into overtime.
In overtime the Beavers received the ball first and Elias Brown would score his third touchdown day from two yards away. Kicker Cameron Smith converted the extra point, which would prove to be crucial because although Butte would score a touchdown on its overtime possession, they would miss the extra point resulting in the Beavers's overtime victory.
The Beavers will now prepare to return home on Saturday, November 2nd, as they host Sierra College at 1 p.m.
