CCSF WINS NORCAL TITLE OVER CHABOT, 40-30; WILL HOST SADDLEBACK IN CCCAA TITLE GAME DEC. 12
City College of San Francisco scored first and maintained a solid advantage throughout to take a 40-30 victory over visiting Chabot College in the Northern California Football Conference championship game Saturday afternoon. The Rams will host the California Community College Athletic Association title game on Saturday afternoon, Dec. 12, against Saddleback College. The Gauchos defeated visiting Long Beach CC, 43-17, for the Southern California title Saturday night in Mission Viejo.
A 7-yard pass from Anthony Gordon to Antoine Porter gave CCSF the lead less than two minutes into the game. That combination proved unstoppable most of the afternoon. San Francisco extended the margin to 26-3 before Chabot finally reached the end zone on a 3-yard run by Zack Johnson with four seconds left in the first half. The Gladiators had taken over four yards out following a bad snap that sailed over the CCSF punter.
San Francisco provided the Gladiators some life after the break, giving the ball away on three consecutive offensive plays midway through the second half (two fumbles and an interception). That allowed Chabot to score twice, closing to within ten points, at 40-30, with 6:09 left in the game on a 3-yard run by Ondre Rudolph, his second TD of the game. After stopping a 2-point conversion attempt that would have made it a one possession game, CCSF held the Gladiators to just 9 net offensive yards the rest of the way. The Rams ended it on a pass interception by defensive back Ricky Johnson with 2:05 remaining – with Chabot having no timeouts left.
Three of Chabot's touchdowns came off turnovers. The Rams held on their own six after one giveaway, but then turned the ball back to Chabot on the next play -- leading to the game's final score.
STATISTIC LEADERS:
Gordon completed 23 of 43 passes for 380 yards and four scores. Porter caught 11 for 124 yards and two TDs. Nick Devere was 7 for 98. CCSF netted only 14 yards rushing. Namane Modise had 61 yards on 16 carries, but the Rams had significant losses on the bad snap and fumbles. Elijah Dale, the CCSF's leading season rusher (1,019 yards) did not play.
Chabot quarterback Jose Ferreira completed 20 of 45 passes for 205 yards. Alan Busey caught five passes for 84 yards and D'Ryan Sanders was 6 for 42. CCSF limited Chabot to 38 net rushing yards.
So the total net rushing by both teams in the 70-point game was 52 yards.
--CCSF has won a record six previous championship games and finished second eight times. The 2012 "loss" in the title game at Bakersfield has been officially vacated -- with no champion declared. This will be the first finals appearance for Saddleback.
