Regional Championships lead to 5CTCA Runners of the Week for Week 12
November 18, 2024
SALINAS - The 3C2A NorCal and SoCal Regional Championships held at Toro Park in Salinas and on the campus of Chaffey College, respectively, crowned four champions. Three of the four have been named previous Runners of the Week and all look primed for high finishes at next week's 3C2A State Championship in Fresno.
Down south, Saddleback's Dana Ibarra Canales continued her hot streak as she's placed first in every race this season except the Manny Bautista Invitational. Ibarra Canales won the Socal Regional in 18:58, an improvement of nearly 30 seconds since the SoCal Preview Meet. The spring 1500-meter champion appears ready to take a shot at the individual title next week at Woodward Park. Ian Rosen of San Diego Mesa picked the right meet to pick up his second individual win of the season. Rosen won the Manny Bautista Invitational earlier this fall and was a 6-second winner at the SoCal Championship over multiple ROTW recipients. The Olympian placed 40th at last year's state championship but is now in a position to give San Diego Mesa a potential second consecutive individual winner.
Clovis Crush sophomore Rhiannon Walker is one race away from a perfect record this fall. She was a 38-second winner at the NorCalChampionship at Toro Park making her the sixth-fastest ever on the course. Having already run 18:24 over the Woodward Park course in a solo effort at the Central Valley Conference Championship, it would be hard not to peg Walker as the favorite. Hartnell picked up its 12th NorCal Champion individual champion in Jesse Blanco, with no other program having more than six winners. Jesse won by 27 seconds and tied the seventh-best performance on the Toro Park course. Blanco has been undefeated since the NorCal Preview Meet. He will give Hartnell a legitimate contender for the overall title on November 23.
