McCartney, Lopez earn first CCCWPCA Athlete of the Week honors
ORANGE - The California Community College Water Polo Coaches Association is honoring Alana McCartney of the College of Marin and Alex Lopez of Mt. San Antonio as its first two Athlete of the Week honorees for the 2023 season.
McCartney has been on an absolute tear to begin the season as she leads the state in goals (46), shots (85), steals (41) and overall points (58). In nine games played, she has recorded two or more goals in each game highlighted by a nine-goal outburst against Cabrillo. Additionally, she has pocketed at least one steal in eight games featuring a nine-steal game against Modesto.
There has not been many close to catching Lopez during the first two weeks of the season as he has acted as arguably the best player in the pool across the state. In 14 games, he leads the state in goals (82), assists (47), steals (47) and points (129). He has not score less than two goals in any game this season and has scored five or more goals in 12 games. He touched the double-digit mark in goals twice as he netted 10 goals against Palomar and PEAK. He has recorded at least one assist in every game and one steal in every game. Additionally, he has led the Mounties fourth-overall ranking so far this season.
