MODESTO - Long-time previous host Modesto JC is staging the 2023 California Community College Athletic Association track and field championships on Friday and Saturday, May 19-20.
FRIDAY SCHEDULE: Combined events athletes get the competition underway Friday with the men’s decathlon 100 meters, at 11 a.m. and the women’s heptathlon 100 hurdles, at 11:30 a.m.. There are also field event finals Friday in the women’s and men’s hammer throw (11 a.m. and 1 p.m., respectively), the triple jump (women at 1:30 p.m., men at 3:30 p.m.) and discus throw (women at 3 p.m., men at 6:30 p.m.).
Two distance race finals will be contested Friday, in the 10,000 meters -- starting at 7 p.m.
--OPENING CEREMONIES take place on Friday at 5:30 p.m.
SATURDAY competition gets underway with the decathlon 110 hurdles and the heptathlon long jump, both at 10 a.m.
Field event finals begin at 12 noon with the women’s shot put at 12 noon and both the men’s javelin throw and long jump at 1 p.m.
Saturday running finals start at 3:45 p.m. (3,000 meter steeplechase) and conclude at 8:15 p.m. (4 x 400 relays).
This Is an all-finals competition, with qualifying from May 12 region meets held at Yuba College and San Diego Mesa College.
MODESTO HISTORY: The California JC State Championships were held in conjunction with the California Relays at Modesto JC from 1955 to 1972. During the 67-year “Relays” run 30 world records were set. CBS began its pioneer weekly series of track and field telecasts at the 1969 California Relays and that series continued from worldwide locations.
REGIONAL CHAMPIONS
NOR CAL WOMEN: Hartnell College repeated as NorCal women’s champions, rolling up 167 1/2 points to outdistance San Joaquin Delta (92), De Anza (80), Diablo Valley (66), Modesto (62 1/2), College of the Redwoods (58), Butte (44), College of the Sequoias (37), Shasta (34), and Merritt (28) – with 18 college scoring.
NORCAL MEN: Modesto JC won the 101st year NorCal men’s title with 121 1/2 points, followed by Hartnell with 77, and defending chcampion American River (60); then De Anza (59), Sequoias (52), Merritt (51), Chabot (49), Delta (44), Redwoods (42), and Fresno CC (37) – among 22 scoring teams.
NOTEWORTHY: Modesto JC hosted the first Northern Calif. JC championships (men) on April 28, 1923. The Pirates won to begin the second century of meets.
SOCAL WOMEN: Mt. San Antonio successfully defended it SoCal women’s crown, scoring 196 points to outdistance Cerritos (144). Host San Diego Mesa was third (72), followed by Riverside CC (51), Bakersfield (44), West Los Angeles (32), Moorpark (30, Golden West (29), El Camino (28), and Long Beach CC (26), with 22 college teams scoring.
SOCAL MEN: Mt. SAC completed a second straight sweep of titles with 223 points, aheadof San Diego Mesa (170) and Riverside (142). Others in the top ten: El Camino (45), Moorpark (34), West Los Angeles (33), Cerritos (30), Bakersfield (22), Glendale (19), Orange Coast (14) – as 22 teams scored.
Several 2022 champions will be defending their titles this weekend at Modesto.
