Neilson Powless, son of American River XC/Track Coach, Jeanette Allred-Powless, excelling at Tour de France
Neilson Powless is one of the top American riders through the first nine stages of the 2023 Tour de France and currently leads the prestigious King of the Mountains competition heading into Tuesday's Stage 10 race from Vulcania to Issoire. The stage will cover 167.2 kilometers (103.9 miles) and feature several second- and third-category climbs. Powless is the son of Jeanette Allred-Powless, the head women's cross country and track and field coach at American River College and herself an elite runner who qualified for three Olympics for Guam. She has also competed in some of the top track and field competitions throughout the world, including seven World Championships.
Neilson is currently in 36th place in the Tour de France's overall standings but carries first place in the King of the Mountain competition - and the signifying polka dot jersey - with 46 points and has an 18-point lead over Felix Gaul of Austria. Powless has risen to the top of American cycling during his impressive young career.
