The Diablo Valley College Women's Soccer team, in their first trip to the California Community College Athletic Association Women's Soccer State Championships, added another first to their sports history on Friday evening, when they advanced to the State Championship game with a 2-0 over Santa Barbara City College.
The two teams were even through the first half of action, as each team rattled off four shots a piece, and with neither team finding the back of the net. Santa Barbara would find a few more chances early on, taking three corner kicks to the Vikings one in the first 45 minutes, but at halftime the two teams were both scoreless.
In the second half, Diablo Valley College broke the 0-0 tie 16 minutes in when Cameron Chan found the back of the net off an assist from Noelle Lemos in the 61st minute. Diablo Valley would maintain possession over the next 13 plus minutes, rattling off three more attempts including an open net look by Lemos that was blocked by SBCC defender Gardenia Maya in the 69th minute.
Santa Barbara would try to rally late, garnering a corner kick in the 74th minute, and getting a shot on goal off the foot of Blayne Shoffit shortly therafter. Vikings keeper Katie McLaughlin turned the attempt aside though, and eight minutes later Karla Ramos gave Diablo Valley some breathing room with an unassisted strike in the 82nd minute.
The Vaqueros would get off three more shots and get another corner in the final 18 minutes of regulation, but two of their three attempts were saved by McLaughlin and the third sailed over the goal, as Diablo Valley College advanced to the State Championship game for the first time in program history. McLaughlin finished with six total saves on the evening en route to her 13th shutout of the year.
Diablo Valley College will take on Cerritos College on Sunday December 4th at 2:00 PM with the 2016 CCCAA State Title on the line.
