Moorpark’s playoff run ends with 1-0 loss in regional final

One mistake was enough to end the Moorpark College women's soccer team's stunning run through the Southern California regional playoffs.
In search of its first state Final Four berth since 1994, the No. 11-seeded Raiders were unable to answer an early goal and fell 1-0 to No. 2 Rio Hondo in the CCCAA Southern California regional finals Saturday afternoon at the University of La Verne.
"We didn't have one of our better first halves," Moorpark coach Miguel Ruiz said. "We gave up a goal early. They got us again on a bad mistake."
Ruiz's first season as head coach ended with 12 wins, a share of the Western State Conference North Division title and the program's first regional finals berth since 2009..
Moorpark (12-7-3) suffered its first loss of the season 1-0 at Rio Hondo on Sept. 18, the same result as its final loss Saturday.
"They're a good team, but I didn't feel like we were outmatched," said Ruiz. "It was one bad mistake. We were unlucky. Their keeper made some good saves."
Rio Hondo (16-1-4) advances to the state Final Four at DeAnza College in Cupertino next weekend. Cerritos, Fresno City and Modesto also advanced.
Moorpark was shut out for just the fifth time this season.
"We couldn't find the back of the net today," Ruiz said. "That's soccer. They battled. They fought until the last minute.
"We played really well in the second half. Unfortunately, we couldn't put two halves together."
