Taft women's basketball coach Romeo Lagmay named to NCAA Academy staff
Taft College women's basketball head coach Romeo Lagmay, Jr. was selected to as part of the coaching staff for the NCAA College Basketball Academy held this year at the Rock Hill Sports and Event Center in South Carolina, July 27-29.
Lagmay is the only coaching representative from a 3C2A college. Academy coaching staffs are composed of NCAA Divisions II and III, NAIA, community college, and high school coaches. Coaches were nominated and selected by the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) and the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA). Lagmay had also participated as an academy coach last year.
Nearly 300 prospective student-athletes from the 2025-26 classes were invited to attend the academy. The NCAA College Basketball Academies give prospective men's and women's student-athletes a sample of the college basketball experience. Organized with input from the NABC and WBCA, these developmental summer academies pair high-level basketball competition with life skills instruction.
In addition to basketball training, skill development, and games, participants and their parents or chaperones will attend life skills courses about NCAA eligibility and compliance; the recruiting process; name, image and likeness opportunities; agents; and the transfer portal. The academy is the only event NCAA Division I Basketball Coaches are permitted to attend during this period.
In just his first season at Taft in 2023-24, Lagmay directed the Cougars to 19 victories and the college's first trip to the regional playoffs in 12 years, advancing to the second round.
