Cuesta Basketball opened Western State Conference play by hosting the men's and women's teams from Santa Barbara. Prior to the women's game there was a moment of silence in solidarity with the recent events in Santa Barbara and exchange of gifts between the teams, but after that it was all business as the Cuesta fell to the Vaqueros, 63-52, but the Cuesta men won convincingly in their WSC debut, 80-46.
The women were tied after the first quarter, but the Vaqueros, whose gym is currently a Red Cross Evacuation Center, carried a six-point lead to the intermission and found their stroke after the break. Santa Barbara entered the final quarter up by 18, but Cuesta wasn't going to quietly play the good host. The Cougars nearly double the output of their first three quarters with 25 points, however the Vaqueros still managed the double-digit win, 63-52. The Cougars had three scorers in double figures led by Guard Courtney Barba and Forward Dakota Shinn, who netted 14 and 12 respectively. Point Guard Maya Armenta also added ten points and game-highs with 7 assists and 4 steals. The Cougars are now 0-1 in WSC play and 8-6 overall.
The Cougars host Ventura next Wednesday (1/17). The women begin the twinbill at 5 PM, while the men play the nightcap at 7 PM.
