The Bulldogs won five of six tournament games during the holiday season. Their five-game win streak ended in the title game of the Mike Gervasoni Memorial Classic at De Anza College on Wednesday (Dec. 30) as a hot outside shooting Sacramento City College team took a 61-53 decision.
Sacramento (12-3), ranked fifth in Northern California and 11th in the state, netted a pair of three's at the outset during a 7-0 start. The Panthers led, 22-9, before San Mateo got untracked to runoff a dozen points and narrow the gap to 22-21.
Although the Bulldogs never took the lead, they stayed in contention. It was a 2-point game at 45-43 after three quarters when Megan Pham nailed a 3-pointer to end that period. The two teams traded baskets the first half of the final period before Sacramento pulled away at the end, led by tournament MVP Jessica Lauderdale, the game's high scorer with 20 points.
CSM got 15 points, nine rebounds, and four assists from freshman center Mariah Elzy, who followed up on her career high 28-point day in the semifinal win over De Anza to make the all-tournament team. Gabby Jejeh scored 12 on four 3-pointers and also had four steals. Pham had a trio of treys for nine points. Sophia Leon added seven points and six assists.
