Defending champion Mt. San Antonio takes first-day men's and women's leads at 3C2A Track and Field Championships

MODESTO - Jonathan Zavala of Mt. San Antonio College sprinted to the lead off the final turn and came home the clear winner in the opening men’s race, the 10,000 meters, at the 3C4A state track and field championships Friday night at Modesto JC. He clocked 31 minutes, 28.11 seconds for the 25 lap race. Second was Muhammed Ahmed of Chabot (31:31.83), just ahead of Francisco Felix of Bakersfield (31:32.27).  

In the women’s race, Sage Holter of Santa Barbara CC and Andrea Villegas of Hartnell College dueled much of the race, with Holter taking control at the start of the final mile -- moving out to a 9-second advantage with three laps remaining. Holter won in 38:28.08, followed by Villegas (38:43.48) and Mohussin Abakar of San Diego Mesa (39:17.70).  

Those were the only track finals on Friday. Six field event champions were crowned.

Katelyn Strader of Hartnell was the meet’s first winner, taking the women’s hammer with a throw of 160 feet, 4 inches, ahead of Faitalia Ah-Fook of Cerritos (155-1) and Isabella Popejoy of San Joaquin Delta (151-1).

Travis Martin took the men’s hammer throw at 199-1, ahead of Donal Aluesi of Riverside (175-10) and Chance Hefter of Redwoods (also 175-10 but 2 centimeters behind in actual measurement).  

There was one repeat winner on Friday. Alejandra Rosales of Riverside successfully defended her women’s discus throw crown, reaching 148-2 to defeat Angelina Escobar of Cerritos (143-8) and Tearra Haney of Bakersfield (136-2). 

Edward Ta’amillo of Riverside took the men’s discus with a throw of 174-10. Canaan Wharry of Yuba placed second at 162-3, followed by Christian Burroughs of Riverside (156-8). 

Ahnyx Bush of Mt. SAC won the women’s triple jump by less than an inch, at 41-3 3/4, with teammate Summer Stevenson the runner-up at 41-3. Alyssa Burke of Shasta placed third (38-9 1/2).

The men’s triple jump also had a 1-2 Mountie finish, with Namir Hemphill the winner at 51-3 3/4 and Terrence Sweetman second at 47-11. Jaylen Garrison of Fresno CC placed third at 46-6 1/4. 

FIRST DAY COMBINED EVENTS LEADERS: 
Aaron Wood of host Modesto is the first day men’s decathlon leader (after 5 events), with 3654 points – just 24 points better than Jeramiah Havens of San Diego Mesa (3630). Following are Jordan Navarro of Moorpark (3472), Reno Vasquez of Riverside (3358), and Cayden Loth of Orange Coast (3346). Wood was a winner (top scorer) in two events, the long jump (22-9 1/4) and high jump (6-5) – actually tying with Navarro for the best high jump. 

Jazmine Davis of Cerritos has the first day lead in the women’s heptathlon, with 3020 points (after four events). Next in line are Amelia Adamson of Yuba (2653), Mia Nilsen-Aguilar of Moorpark (2596), Alexa Camacho of American River (2552), and Ashlyn Jory of Delta (2528). Davis won the opening 100 meter hurdles in 14.02 and the day concluding 200 meters in 24.80, scoring over 900 points in each of those events.

MT. SAC LEADS IN TEAM TITLE DEFENSES:
Team scores after the first day have defending champion Mt. San Antonio leading both the women’s division (with 30 points) and the men’s race (with 35 points). Other teams in top ten scoring on the first day include:

Women: Cerritos 19; Hartnell 18; Riverside 15; San Joaquin Delta 12; Santa Barbara 10; San Diego Mesa 9; Saddleback 8; Bakersfield and Shasta 6 (each).

Men: Riverside 34; De Anza 20; Yuba 13; College of the Redwoods, Chabot, and Modesto 8 (each); Bakersfield, Fresno, and Hartnell, 6 (each).
