Little movement across 3CFCA state softball rankings
GLENDORA, Calif. - The names are the same in the latest edition of the California Community College Fastpitch Coaches Association State and Regional Polls. There was little movement in the fourth poll of the season with the biggest change taking place in Southern California where No. 2 Mt. San Antonio College finally overtook previous No. 1 Cypress College. College of San Mateo still maintained it’s spot on the top of the heap in both the State and Northern California rankings.
San Mateo, which begins its third poll as the No. 1 team in Northern California and second straight poll as the No. 1 team in the State, is coming off its toughest stretch of the 2018 season with a pair of losses in its last four games. The Bulldogs split a doubleheader with unranked Shasta College and then lost a tough 5-4 contest at State No. 8 and NorCal No. 4 Monterey Peninsula College in extra innings.
In what’s shaping up to arguably be the most wide open race in recent memory, none of the top 10 teams in State changed, but a few shuffled positions. As previously mentioned, the Mounties of Mt. San Antonio College took over the lead in Southern California and grabbed the No. 2 ranking in the State. Cypress College sits No. 3 in the State and No. 2 in SoCal while Sierra College dropped a spot in the State rankings but still maintains a stranglehold of the No. 2 ranking in NorCal. All three of those teams have lost at least one game in their last six outings.
The biggest mover of the week was Bakersfield College, which jumped up three spots in State rankings to No. 7 and one spot in the Southern California rankings to No. 4. There were only three new teams in either regional ranking and all three were schools that received votes in the previous poll. In Northern California, Bay Valley Conference favorite Solano College checked in at No. 8, while Cosumnes River College of the Big 8 Conference sits in the No. 10 spot. In Southern California, Ventura College, which is currently tied with Bakersfield College for the top spot in the Western State Conference North Division, is ranked No. 10.
