Cuesta Softball concluded a tough week by hosting a twinbill with #7 Fresno City. The Rams took both games with late rallies, but the Cougars showed enough to keep them worried. In Game 1, Fresno held a tentative 6-2 lead after three innings, but exploded for ten runs in the 4th inning and pulled away for a 16-4 run-rule victory. In Game 2, Pitcher Sam Cabrera regrouped and shutdown the Rams for the first 5-innings. In the 4th inning, Catcher Megan Black singled and eventually scored the first run of the game off a Fresno miscue to provide Cabrera with a 1-0 lead. However two innings later, Fresno eventually put together another rally by opening the frame with five consecutive hits on their way to a six-run inning and chased Cabrera. The 7-1 loss in the nightcap was the Cougars' fourth setback during a week. Four Cuesta players connected for base-hits in each game and Outfielder Sydney Doherty both teams with five hits and enjoyed a pair of multi-hit games. She was 5-for-6 on the day with a run scored and a RBI. Outfielder Maddie Laskey, who was only activated this week, had a hit in each game and was 2-for-6 on the day. The Cougars are 10-20 overall and return to their Western State Conference schedule next week with two games against the loop. Cuesta hosts Santa Barbara in a rain make-up game on Monday (2:30) and loop leader Bakersfield on Thursday (2:30). The Cougars end the 2018 campaign with a doubleheader against Citrus in Glendora on Friday.
