HR's BY WELLS, DEAN, & DAVIS (SLAM) PUT AWAY YUBA IN SB REGIONAL
Top-seed College of San Mateo will host a 4-team Super Regional softball tournament May 12-14 after blanking Yuba College 14-0 in the concluding game of a California Community College Athletic Association opening playoff series over the weekend. CSM blanked the visiting 49ers, 24-0, in the two 5-inning abbreviated contests.
Meagan Wells, Samantha Dean, and Jordan Davis all smashed home runs Saturday for No. 1 CSM (33-6). Bay Valley champion Yuba finished 19-17. Dean also had a double and Gaby Zucchiatti hit a pair of doubles in her perfect 3-for-3 day.
Starter Morgan Jones pitched the first three innings to improve her perfect season record to 7-0, striking out four and walking none and allowing just a pair of hits. Dean finished the game with a near perfect two innings of work, allowing no hits, striking out four, and walking one batter. That followed up on Madison Mercer's perfect game in Friday's series opener.
"We played both sides of the ball well this weekend.," said CSM coach Nicole Borg. "It was a great team effort." The Bulldogs played errorless ball while totaling 26 hits in plate appearance over just eight innings.
SUPER REGIONAL SCHEDULE: CSM plays No. 11 Taft (27-12) at 2 p.m. and No. 4 Sierra (34-8) meets No. 5 Foothill (34-6) at 4 p.m. in Friday's openers of the double elimination tournament. The regional winner advances to the Final Four at Bakersfield, May 19-21.
San Mateo scored 10 runs in the third inning on Saturday, seven on home runs. Dean's 3-run smash got it started. RBI singles by Lauren Quirke and Kristen Kowaki kept it going. Davis then hit a slam and Zucchiatti closed it by doubling home Dean.
STAT NOTES: Wells scored a Northern California leading 64th run of the season with her solo shot in the second inning, her eighth homer of the year. Allie Stines co-leads the state with 21 doubles. Mercer has a NorCal leading 0.91 ERA (No. 2 in the state.), Zucchiatti ranks No. 3 in NorCal batting at .553 and Wells No. 5 at .515.
As a team, San Mateo leads Northern California in most hitting categories: .405 batting average, 345 runs scored, 307 RBIs, 449 hits, and 100 doubles.
