#1 CSM SOFTBALL TOPS MPC, 13-1, IN SIX; MAINTAINS PERFECT COAST CONFERENCE MARK
Jordan Davis had a grand slam and Kaitlin Chang a 3-run homer as College of San Mateo's state top-ranked softball team topped host Monterey Peninsula College, 13-1, in a 6-inning game Tuesday.
The Coast Conference crossover game increased CSM's perfect Coast North record to 5-0, while Monterey fell to 1-5 in the Coast South (4-18 overall).
Starting pitcher Morgan Jones remained unbeaten on the season at 8-0, allowing one unearned run over four innings. Christy Peterson retired all six batters she face in relief, striking out the final two batters to end the game after six innings on the mercy rule. Jones ranks second in Northern California with a 0.78 earned run average. Peterson lowered her ERA to 1.54.
San Mateo had effectively put the game away with six runs in the top of the final frame, highlighted by the Davis slam.
Davis went 3-for-3 at the plate. Chang also had four RBIs, including a double in the fourth to score Harlee Donovan (who had two hits and scored twice). Chang scored three runs.
WELLS & DONOVAN PACE STATE IN RUNS SCORED: Meagan Wells scored two runs to take the state lead with 34, one ahead of Donovan.
UPCOMING: San Mateo is the only team in the state with 20 or more wins. The Bulldogs continue Coast crossover play the week. They travel to San Jose City College on Thursday (March 17) at 3 p.m. and return home on Saturday to host Coast South leader Cabrillo at 11 a.m. – looking for a 51st consecutive home victory over three seasons.
