IRVINE - Not much changed in the second California Community College Men’s Volleyball Coaches Association State Poll of the 2024 season.
The same teams make up the top 10 in the Feb. 28 issue of the poll. And the top six teams from last week’s poll remain in the same places.
The only difference from the first poll to this week’s version is Santa Monica taking sole possession of the seventh spot with Grossmont going to eighth. Those two teams were tied for seventh last week.
It was a light week of action this past week with many teams getting ready for the start of conference action.
Orange Coast, San Diego Mesa, Golden West, Moorpark, Irvine Valley and Santa Barbara City continue to make up the top six of the poll.
Orange Coast stayed as the only undefeated team in the state, moving to 7-0 overall with sweeps over No. 2 San Diego Mesa and Palomar last Wednesday at home. Cole Hauser had 14 kills, Myles Henderson finished with 10 kills and hit .533 and Landon Seymour ended with 24 assists for the Pirates.
Mesa’s record went to 9-2 overall with the loss to the Pirates. The Olympians defeated Fullerton, 25-15, 25-19, 25-13 the following night. San Diego Mesa received 10 kills from Ricardo Lorja and 19 assists from Logan Shepard in the victory.
Golden West remained a strong No. 3 in the poll with a sweep over Palomar and then a 25-18, 22-25, 25-20, 25-22 win over No. 8 Grossmont on the road last Friday.
Moorpark was off from action last week, but remained No. 4 in the rankings. Jacob Knudsen leads the Western State Conference with 75 kills and is averaging 3.46 kills per set.
Irvine Valley remained at No. 5. The Lasers were scheduled to play at Miramar last week, but the match was postponed and will be rescheduled next Monday at IVC.
Santa Barbara City, which was also off last week, remained at No. 6 with a record of 2-3.
And Santa Monica came in at No. 7. The Corsairs have a record of 3-4 overall.
Key matches this week include No. 3 Golden West at No. 2 San Diego Mesa, No. 7 Santa Monica at No. 4 Moorpark, No. 5 Irvine Valley at No. 8 Grossmont, No. 1 Orange Coast at No. 9 Miramar and No. 6 Santa Barbara City at No. 10 Long Beach on Wednesday and Santa Monica at Santa Barbara, Golden West at Miramar and Moorpark at Long Beach City on Friday.
