JC Athletic Bureau, CCCSIA football polls heat up as season makes turn into second half
SAN MATEO – There’s no change among the top five teams in California Community College football after the opening week of league play. College of San Mateo continues atop the JC Athletic Bureau poll of CCC football coaches after beginning Bay 6 competition with the week’s top scoring margin, 62-0, over host San Joaquin Delta -- for a 21st straight league win.
Only four National Division teams remain unbeaten, with 6-0 records -- two each in the north and south. They play in the same leagues in their regions. No. 3 City College of San Francisco will be at No. 1 San Mateo in the Nov. 13 Bay 6 finale. No. 2 Ventura visits No. 4 College of the Canyons on Nov. 6. All must first meet other ranked teams in their leagues. San Mateo hosts No. 17 Laney in a regional TV (KOFY TV20) and national cable (Next Level Sports) game Saturday.
The poll of California Community College Sports Information Association (CCCSIA) members saw the same four teams remain but with some notable shuffling. San Mateo, last week's No. 1, was joined by former No. 2 City College of San Francisco in the top spot but CSM still managed to capture five more first-place votes. Four teams had at least one first-place tally with No. 3 College of the Canyons grabbing two and exchanging seats with No. 4 Ventura, which earned one.
Northern League games Saturday find No. 14/15 Bakersfield at Ventura and No. 15/11 Allan Hancock at Canyons.
Although National Division teams had an “official” bye week before beginning league play over the weekend, Diablo Valley faced a pair of makeups and an early league debut on Friday -- three games in 12 days. The Vikings lost their first 2021 game on Monday, Oct. 4, to College of the Sequoias, 42-32, in a game postponed two days (moved from COS to DVC). They then dropped their Oct. 9 make-up at Sierra, 49-48 (in overtime). DVC, however, unleashed a full aerial attack in its nationally televised (Oct. 15) Bay 6 opener at Laney, winning 54-29 – led by QB Joey Aguilar (18 of 25, 323 yards, 3 TDs, 390 total offense). No. 20 Sierra had its NorCal league opener with College of the Siskiyous COVID postponed to Nov. 19. No. 13 Mt. San Antonio won a make-up with Saddleback, 36-34, then dropped its Central League opener to El Camino, 30-24. This week the Mounties (3-1) host reigning state champion No. 14 Riverside (4-2).
New to the CCCSIA poll this week are Sierra (3-2), tied for No. 21 with American River (3-3), and also No. 24 Mt. San Jacinto (5-1) and No. 25 Santa Barbara City. (4-1).
