CCCSIA football poll shows no changes among top but then things get interesting
SACRAMENTO - After a restful bye week on Oct. 6 for most of the teams setting up camp lately in the California Community College Sports Information Association poll, life at the top of this week's rankings d is comprised of the same six teams in the same order. But take a look at the next few spots and there's some action with four of the next five teams jumping at least four positions.
With league seasons now in full swing and some more showdowns among ranked teams on the horizon, perhaps some juggling among the leaders is still possible. For now, though, the top six are status quo with Fullerton (7-0), College of the Canyons (6-0), Riverside City (5-1), Butte (5-1), Ventura (5-1) and Laney (5-1) each posting victories on Saturday to hold on to their spots. The Hornets, on the heels of their 26th straight win, garnered 12 of 13 first-place votes and 259 points while Canyons picked up their other first-place tally and is close behind with 246.
But look past the first half-dozen teams and you'll find College of San Mateo (4-2), which has been up and down the poll this season, climbing its way from No. 11 to No. 7, thanks to a convincing 41-9 win over Santa Rosa. Unbeaten Mt. San Jacinto (6-0), the highest-ranked American Division team in the state, also saw a jump of four places to No. 8. City College of San Francisco (4-2) got doubled up by Laney, 42-21, and slipped to two spots to No. 9 while Modesto (4-2) and Chabot (5-1) rose three and two places, respectively, into 10th and 11th, on the heels of victories last weekend.
Mt. San Antonio (4-2), Fresno City (4-2), Chaffey (6-1) and Santa Rosa (4-2) bring the poll to the 15th spot while Southwestern (4-2), undefeated Reedley (6-0) and Hartnell (6-0), San Bernardino Valley (5-1) and Sierra (4-2) round out the top 20. Reedley and Hartnell are on a collision course for first place in the NCFC Golden Coast on Nov. 10 in Salinas.
Three games between top 20 teams highlight this week's schedule including a top-10 battle between No. 6 Laney and visiting No. 7 San Mateo. Mt. San Jacinto, ranked eighth, will travel to No. 19 San Bernardino Valley while No. 11 Chabot hits the road for No. 15 Santa Rosa.
In the JC Athletic Bureau Poll, College of the Canyons took over the top spot and was followed in the top five by Butte, Riverside City, Ventura and Laney.
