Both teams entered with 1-2 records under brand new head coaches. Both teams were looking for their first win in the Golden Coast League this season.
And after both teams traded big plays all night, it was West Hills coming away with a thrilling 34-28 home win over Cabrillo.
Freshman QB Myron Norfleet continue to dazzle with his third "hat trick" of the season - scoring on runs of 14, 2 and 6 yards. His final dive into the endzone was the game's final score, breaking a 28-28 tie with just 21 seconds remaining.
Norfleet's 10 rushing touchdowns leads the California Community College Athletic Association.
He shared duties on Saturday with Falcon sophomore QB J.T. Bradwell, who also had some good moments in moving the offense through the air and with his running ability as well.
The WHCC offense, starting fast the first two games with 14 points in the opening quarter, struggled early against the Seahawks. On their first offensive series, the Falcons dug themselves an early hole - as Norfleet's third-down pass was intercepted by Aaron Pride, who raced 25 yards for a score and a quick 6-0 lead.
The Falcons didn't get on the scoreboard until the second quarter, when Bradwell led a 9-play, 90-yard drive - capped by a fourth-down reverse by WR Nick WIlliams, who evaded the entire secondary. His 32-yard highlight run gave WHCC a 7-6 lead (Blake Hanggi PAT). Williams had his best game of the season, finishing with 9 catches for 160 yards - and several big plays facing man-to-man coverage.
WHCC led at halftime, 14-13, following Norfleet's first TD run, set-up by a fumble recovery and 64-yard return by DB Rochon Bhattacharya (TD erased by a penalty). Falcon LB Josh Parks delivered the next big play, intercepting a Nick Martig pass and taking it 59 yards for a touchdown and a 21-13 lead with 6:40 left in the third quarter.
That set the stage for a wild final quarter.
Cabrillo RB Terrence Smith had a pair of rushing touchdowns in the fourth - his second tying the game, 28-28, with only 2:11 remaining. The game seemed to head for a fitting overtime period, but Norfleet was determined to finish the contest better than he started.
He needed only 1:44 (7 plays, 71 yards) to move the Falcons down the field. The drive included three big pass plays: two to Williams (17, 15) and one to WR Zach White (13) and an 11-yard scramble. The Falcons never faced a third down on the scoring drive - and ended with Norfleet taking the option across the goal line.
The WHCC defense need one last stop. With only 18 second to work with, the Seahawks moved the ball near midfield before Martig's final pass with intercepted by Bhattacharya (45-yard return) with one second left.
Sophomore DL Eric Powell had another big game, posting 10 tackles (6 for loss), two sacks, and two forced fumbles. Parks also had 10 tackles (one for loss). DL Riku Nishimura registered his first two sacks of the season.
DBs Andreaz Spencer and Asante Jones had interceptions, as the defense forced seven total turnovers.
The teams combined for 62 points - without a passing TD.
UP NEXT: After a Bye Week, WHCC will host Foothill on Oct. 14.
