SANTA ROSA -- Four costly turnovers, the last on a potential tie-breaking drive, saw Northern California top-ranked College of San Mateo's prospects for a league-opening football victory end with a game-winning 20-yard field goal by Santa Rosa JC with just 33 seconds remaining Saturday. Andros Pedroza split the uprights for a 17-14 victory after CSM had stopped the Bearcubs offense at the two.

 

So the Bulldogs (4-2 overall, 0-1 league),who were top-ranked nationally last month, will need to rebound for their Bay Six League home opener Saturday at 1 p.m. against De Anza College (2-4, 0-1).  San Mateo is unbeaten (3-0) at home this season. CSM will face its two Peninsula rivals back-to-back, traveling to Foothill for a Halloween outing on Oct. 31.    

 

CSM fell behind at Santa Rosa, 14-0, midway through the second quarter before coming back to control much of the rest of the game – except at the end. Two lost fumbles and two pass interceptions made the difference. Santa Rosa did not turn the ball over! Stats such as San Mateo's 335-323 total offense advantage or 33:30 to 26:30 time of possession margin meant nothing at the end.

 

NIUPALU SHINES: Johnny Niupalu was CSM's top offensive performer, catching six passes for 118 yards, including a 70-yard scoring hook-up from quarterback Dru Brown to get the Bulldogs on the board with 4:56 left in the first half. Niupalu, a 6-1 sophomore out of San Mateo High, now has 27 receptions for 540 yards and five TDs this season.

 

The Bulldogs mounted a 99 and a half yard drive in the fourth quarter to tie the score at 14 with 8:13 left on a 25-yard run by James Clark. The drive really totaled 120 1/2 offensive yards, including overcoming penalties. 

 

Santa Rosa had downed its punt on the CSM one yard line. But the Bulldogs actually started a half yard closer to the goal after a delay of game penalty on first down. The key play in an official nine-play 99-yard drive was a 49-yard pass from Brown to Miles Willis to give the Bulldogs a first down on the Santa Rosa nine. Brown than rushed to the four before San Mateo was penalized back to the 25 for a crackback block – after which Clark immediately ran to paydirt to tie the game.

 

The Bulldogs then held SRJC to another three and out and, after a punt, took over on their own 23 with 7:45 left in the game. That potential winning drive was thwarted on a pass interception by Santa Rosa's Keith Maurice on his own 48. The Bearcubs then retained possession for more than four minutes before getting the winning field goal at the 33 second mark.    

 

Prior to the deciding field goal, Pedroza had missed twice – including a block on his attempt from the 26 by CSM safety Joshua Clarke at the end of the first half.

 

WOOD RETURNS: Running back Joey Wood returned to action after missing most of the last two games with an injury and had 40 yards on 11 carries. But Isiah Williams was CSM's top ball carrier in the game with 50 yards on ten trips. He took over San Mateo's season rushing lead with 309 yards -- to 306 for Wood.

 

--Brown completed 15 of 26 passes for 210yards. The freshman signal caller surpassed the thousand yard mark for the season with 1047 yards, and has completed 58 of 102 attempts, with 11 TDs.

 

--CSM expects to drop a bit from its No. 5 state and No. 1 Northern California ranking this week.
