West Hills Wins Home Opener As Stanek Goes 7 Strong
January 29, 2015
The West Hills Falcons opened up their season at home on Thursday against College of Siskiyous, and took the opener led by a strong pitching performance by Sophomore RHP Dakota Stanek. Stanek went 7 innings, only allowing 7 hits, 2 earned runs, and 5 strikeouts. After falling behind 1-0 in the 3rd inning, the Falcons answered back with 6 runs of their own in the bottom of the 3rd inning. Joe Cochran (FR-SS) led the inning off with a single, and after a hit batter and walk, the bases were loaded for Sophomore first baseman, Derek DeNovellis. DeNovellis delivered with a 2 RBI single, which was followed by another RBI single from freshman DH Mckay Glines. With runners on 1st & 2nd, a bunt laid down by Sophomore OF Zach English was mishandled by Siskiyou's starting pitcher, Kevin Bevilacqua, as he threw the ball away over the first baseman, scoring two more runs and moving English to third base. After a sacrifice fly by Sophomore 3b Alex Westlund, the Falcons had a commanding 6-1 lead. Though Siskiyous answered with a run of their own in the top of the 6th inning, the Falcons came right back in the bottom of the 7th inning, when Sophomore catcher, Dustin Gaither, hit a 2 RBI single with the bases loaded, making the score 8-2 in favor of the Falcons. Ryan O'Donnell (FR-LHP) gave up one run in the 8th inning, and Alex Acord (FR-RHP) pitched a scoreless 9th inning to seal the victory. With the win, Stanek improves his record to 1-0, while starter Kevin Bevilacqua falls to 0-1. Derek DeNovellis went 3 for 4 on the day, with 1 run and 2 RBI's, and Mckay Glines went 2 for 4 with 2 runs and 1 RBI.
The second game of the doubleheader headed to extra innings, as the Falcons gave up a 7-2 lead in the 8th inning, but came back to tie the game at 8-8 in the bottom of the 9th. The game was called due to darkness, and will be continued on Friday at 11am. Following the conclusion of the 2nd game, the Falcons will wrap up this three game series vs. Siskiyous, as freshman pitcher, Justin Vlotho, will make his collegiate debut.
