College of the Desert breaks new athletics facility groundbreaking
PALM DESERT - College of the Desert celebrated the groundbreaking of its new state-of-the-art athletics facility. This new facility marks a significant upgrade to the campus's athletic offerings and will serve as a centerpiece for both student-athletes and the broader community.
The $36.4 million athletics facility build is part of a phased development plan identified in the 2020 Athletics Facilities Feasibility study. This first phase will involve the demolition of the existing football stadium to make way for a 20,000-square-foot stadium building, featuring team locker rooms, a 3,000-square-foot weight room, sports officials' facilities, and auxiliary spaces such as equipment storage, laundry, video, and IT rooms. The project will also install new sports lighting for the football and soccer fields and create newly landscaped and renovated parking areas. The project is expected to be completed between Spring and Late Summer of 2026.
"This groundbreaking aids our efforts to create a premier athletic environment that will support our students' physical development, health, and success," said Acting Athletic Director Gary Plunkett.
Once completed, the athletics facility will enhance College of the Desert's reputation as a leader in student athletic development, providing modern, high-quality spaces that support sports and community engagement. This project is made possible by Measure CC funding.
The College of the Desert Bond Program includes Measure CC, which authorized $577,860,000 as defined in the original ballot language. Measure CC was passed on November 8, 2016 by a margin of 72.66%. A complete rundown of the ballot measure can be found HERE
