Sports Information Tips
STATISTICS
The primary mission is to have statistics that are complete, accurate and timely for fans, student-athletes, competitive balance and recruiters.
• COMPLETE - Make sure all required statistics are kept. For example, basketball box scores need to have assists, turnovers, steals, blocks, fouls. Just putting in team totals or zeros IS NOT being compliant.
• ACCURATE - Know the stat rules. What is a basketball assist? What is an assisted tackle or a sack? What is an error? How do you credit a win for a softball/baseball pitcher?
• TIMELY - Stats need to be inputted no later than two business days after the conclusion of the game. (Bylaw 4.3.3).
Important Reminders
• Dates: Input schedules by Aug. 15 (Fall sports), Oct. 20 (basketball), Jan. 15 (spring sports)
For tournaments without playing schedule, input an event for each expected game and mark "TBA" as the opponent.
• Forfeits: Forfeits can only be declared if both teams and the official, referee or "other appropriate contest official" is present. Any other instance for a contest that has not been played yet is a "No
Contest" (Bylaw 4.3.5). However, a game can be declared a forfeit for conference standings purposes but will not affect overall records. For games that have been played, games can be forfeited and will affect
both overall and conference records.
• Rosters: MUST be posted at least 24 hours in advance of your first contest. CCCAA definition here
• Results: IMPORTANT - Update your result in Presto ASAP after a game. (can be done on a mobile phone)
CHAMPIONSHIP PROGRAM AND PLAQUE PHOTOS
• Samples here
• Photos for programs need to be posed/formal team photos and high-resolution (i.e., no mobile phone).
• Photos for plaques need to be team members, coaches and staff only.
WEBSITES
• Information should be up-to-date and complete with at least the following information: rosters, staff directory, schedules and results

POSTGAME RECAP TIPS
• Make sure all pertinent information is in the first paragraph (i.e., the lede) - Who, what, where, when (Example)
• Spell out all abbreviations on first reference (except CCCAA, NBA, NFL, NCAA)
• Use proper name of schools on first reference (i.e., "Fresno City College", "Ventura College").
• Tease next game
• Don't just write and send to media when you win. Credibility is built when sending after a loss as well.
FEATURE STORY TIPS
• Look for human interest stories from your student-athletes and coaches -- even your staff!
• Campus public information office can help write the story. Or contact the CCCAA for tips on how to promote a specific story.
• Use this type of feature story to bring attention to your program, and then use the opportunity to brag about your program
