The San Diego City College women's soccer team is off to its best start in team history after defeating Victor Valley, 4-0, on Tuesday to improve to 3-1 on the season. Four different Knights scored in the victory, including Melissa Valadez, who put in her sixth goal of the season.
It was City's third consecutive victory, which equals the Knights' longest win streak in team history. They also won three in a row in 2014.
The first half hour of the game had very little action, but that changed in the 31st minute after a Victor Valley foul in the middle of the field. City's Briana Gonzalez took the free kick from just outside the center circle and launched the ball so high that Valley's goalkeeper could not get to it as it dropped into the net for the first goal.
It was the only goal of the first half, but it wouldn't be the last of the game. City's Ana Sierra and Valadez connected on back-to-back goals in the 62nd and 65th minutes to give the Knights a commanding 3-0 lead.
Valadez put in her sixth goal of the year from outside the box after receiving a ball from Sierra in the 62nd minute. Valadez has scored in three straight games and is currently tied for third in the state in total goals.
In the 65th minute, Valadez placed the ball in front of the net where Sierra was waiting to tap in her first goal of the season.
Sylvia Rojas added a fourth goal for the Knights in the 90th minute on a 25-yard shot from the left side of the box.
Knights goalkeeper Veronika Castillo had nine saves on the day, eight of which came in the second half when Victor Valley became much more aggressive on offense. It's her first shutout of the new season.
The Knights have played all four games at home so far and will play one more on Friday against Pasadena at 2 p.m.
