Women's Basketball Loses Close One to Top-5 Orange Coast

Vaqueros Battle to the End in a 66-60 Thriller Against Orange Coast College

The Santa Barbara City College Women's Basketball team (6-1) showcased grit and determination on November 23, 2024, falling just short in a hard-fought 66-60 game against Orange Coast College (5-2). Despite the loss, the Vaqueros proved their mettle in a contest defined by relentless defense, clutch performances, and unwavering spirit.

Early Struggles and Resilience
The game began with Orange Coast taking control early, outscoring SBCC 14-8 in the first quarter. The Vaqueros struggled to find their rhythm offensively, shooting just 25% from the field. Forward Aariah Fox, however, kept SBCC within striking distance with her aggressive play on the boards and inside scoring.

A Second-Quarter Surge
SBCC roared back in the second quarter with a 22-point explosion, led by guard Kenedy Nutter's perimeter shooting and Fox's dominance on both ends of the court. Fox notched 13 points and 9 rebounds by halftime, while Nutter added 15 points, including three timely three-pointers. The Vaqueros' defense tightened, holding Orange Coast to just 33.3% shooting, as the teams entered halftime tied at 30.

The Third Quarter Grind
The momentum shifted again in the third quarter, with Orange Coast capitalizing on SBCC turnovers to score 25 points off mistakes. Zoie Lamkin led the charge for the Pirates, sinking three treys en route to a game-high 17 points. SBCC's offense faltered, managing only 21.4% shooting, and Orange Coast regained a slim 46-40 lead heading into the final period.

A Thrilling Fourth Quarter
The Vaqueros refused to back down, igniting a thrilling fourth-quarter rally. Isis Poteet and Nutter attacked the rim, cutting the lead to four with just under two minutes to play. A suffocating defensive effort forced turnovers, giving SBCC a chance to tie the game. In the final seconds, Kaylee Bosetti attempted a drive to the basket, but the shot missed. Orange Coast sealed the win at the free-throw line hittking 4-4 the last 7 seconds, on a night where they struggled 10/28 for the game.
