Pirates remain unbeaten in OEC with win over Lasers

COSTA MESA -- It was a perfect run through the first round of Orange Empire Conference play for the Orange Coast College women's basketball team as the Pirates cruised to a 74-41 home win over Irvine Valley on Wednesday night inside the Peterson Gym.

Another very balanced offensive effort for the back-to-back state champs, who improve to 19-3 overall and 6-0 in conference. Melaiah Joseph and Zoie Lamkin each had 18 point for the Pirates, while Alyssa Dreessen added 13 points. Myia Collins nearly hit a double-double with nine points and 12 rebounds, while Kayla Borgelt chipped in eight points and three assists.

For the Lasers (11-11, 3-3), they were held to just 29 percent shooting for the game (19-of-62), including 2-of-18 from 3-point land and just 3-of-10 from the free-throw line. Gianna DeForest and Samantha Barnett each had eight points, while Neryah Lokeni added seven points.

Through the first trip through the OEC schedule, it's the Pirates (ranked No. 2 in the state) at 6-0 overall, just a game up on second-place Fullerton and three games up on the Lasers, Santa Ana and Cypress.

Coast will take on Cypress on Friday at Cypress College, beginning at 6 p.m. The Chargers gave the Pirates their toughest game of conference play as Coast gutted out a 57-50 win back on Jan. 8.
