COSTA MESA -- Nothing like playing the first home match of the season against your up-the-road rivals and for the Orange Coast College women's water polo team, that matchup proved favorable as the Pirates toppled the Rustlers, 13-6, in an Orange Empire Conference matchup on Wednesday inside the OCC Aquatics Pavilion.
Faye Garcia led a very balanced OCC offensive attack with three goals, while Evalyn Galeana added two. Single tallies were turned in by Hayden Clark, Jackie Ramirez, Emma Steffens, Natalia Perez, Maya Abu-Salem, Rhoslyn Contreras, Emma Willis and Brooke Baze.
Coast (3-2, 1-0 in the OEC) grabbed the lead right from the opening whistle and scored the seven goals of the match to put the Rustlers (1-4-1, 0-1) in a deep hole early on.
Goalie Emily Jones picked up four saves in the opening two periods of action and kept a clean scoresheet as the Pirates held a 7-0 lead at the half, extending OCC shutout streak to six quarters of play after blanking Cerritos in their previous match.
GWC found some momentum in the third quarter and outscored Coast, 5-4, over that span to trail 11-5 with one quarter left to go. From there Coast clamped back down on defense and held the Rustlers to one fourth-quarter goal, while scoring two of their own to preserve the win.
OCC will host a two-day tournament, beginning on Friday and carrying into Saturday. The Pirates will play on Friday at 10:10 a.m. against Santa Barbara City College and at 1:25 p.m. against Citrus. On Saturday, OCC will battle Riverside at 10:10 a.m. and Long Beach City College at 2:30 p.m.
