
Over the weekend, the Vaqueros women's water polo team earned second place at the SoCal Regional Championship tournament hosted by Orange Coast College. They have earned a chance to play in the State Championship tournament and look to defend their two-time championship title.
SBCC v Miramar 17-13
SBCC matched up against the Jets in the quarter final match. This was a first meeting for the two teams this season. The Vaqueros scored early on, and held onto their 4 goal lead through the match. Maddie Myers found the back of the net 5 times. Cate Daland had 4 goals, 3 drawn ejections, and 2 steals.
SBCC v Riverside 8-7
In the semifinal game, SBCC saw the RCC Tigers for the 3rd time this season. The previous matched had landed in favor of the Tigers, and the Vaqueros were hungry for a win of their own. The score was close, as the two teams traded leads throughout the game. In the fourth quarter, the Vaqueros took back the lead and were able to hold on for the victory. Addie Lane scored three goals, while Jada Ashen and Lily Carrick each had two. Myers was a defensive specialist in the field, with 4 field blocks and three steals. Kate Densmore had 6 blocks on the game.
The win puts the Vaqueros over the 30 game win mark for the 8th year in a row.
SBCC v Long Beach 7-13
In the championship game, the Vaqueros faced the Long Beach Vikings for the first time since the second weekend of season. This game marked the 7th appearance of SBCC in the SoCal final match. SBCC led early in the match, and the game was tied at half. The Vikings pulled away in the final quarter, with a final score 7-13. In a well balanced offense, 6 Vaqueros scored goals. Daland led with 2 goals, while Ashen, Carrick, Lane, Myers, and Erin Otsuki each had one. Densmore was stellar in the cage with 11 blocks.
The Vaqueros now sport a 30-6 season record. For their efforts, SBCC advances to the State Championship Tournament next weekend November 21-23 at Long Beach City College. They will go in seeded 2nd in the South, and will face the North 3rd seed San Joaquin Delta College at 2:15 pm.
