SBCC Vaqueros Men's Basketball Recap – Monterey Bay Classic Tournament

The Santa Barbara City College Vaqueros showcased their skill and grit during the Monterey Bay Classic Tournament, securing 3rd place after a 2-1 finish against solid CCCAA teams. Here's a detailed look at their weekend:

Game 1: SBCC 85, Monterey Peninsula 57

  • Halftime Score: SBCC 38-36
  • Key Performances:
    • James Reach: 22 points, 4 three-pointers (All-Tournament Selection)
    • Will Pace: 17 points, 7 rebounds
    • Kyle Haughy: 12 points
    • Jose Saurez: 5 points (key late-game contributions)

The Vaqueros battled against Monterey Peninsula's challenging matchup zone and MPC's Kaden Lopes' hot first-half shooting (16 points). SBCC found their stride in the second half, using a 17-6 run to gain separation and closing the game on a 35-11 burst. The interior dominance of Pace and Haughy, combined with Reach's perimeter shooting, was pivotal.

Game 2: Cypress 69, SBCC 47

  • Halftime Score: Cypress 28-20
  • Key Performances:
    • James Reach: 13 points (perfect 3-for-3 from beyond the arc)
    • Will Pace: 10 points, 6 rebounds

SBCC started strong against Cypress, the eventual tournament champions, taking an early 10-4 lead. However, turnovers (10 in the first half) and offensive struggles (42% shooting) hampered their chances. Despite a better second half, the Vaqueros couldn't overcome Cypress's elite defense, falling into the 3rd place game against Sierra.

Game 3: SBCC 68, Sierra 65

  • Halftime Score: Sierra 41-30
  • Key Performances:

SBCC staged a dramatic comeback, erasing an 11-point halftime deficit. A renewed defensive effort and clutch plays from Nick Tjaden sealed the victory. Tjaden tied the game with a critical three-pointer, made a steal, and scored a contested layup to secure the lead. Coach Engebretsen praised Tjaden's leadership and ability to perform under pressure.
