SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The Carpinteria contingent got loud, stomped their feet, and cheered for Amarise Camargo as she checked in for the fourth period. The freshman forward didn't disappoint her fans, hitting three 3-pointers, grabbing three rebounds, and launching a pass the length of the court for an assist to help Santa Barbara City College in an 89-36 win over LA Mission College.
The Eagles played with a depleted lineup, featuring only two bench players. Still, the Vaqueros took care of business and implemented their game plan.
"The credit goes to each member of the team for continuing to trust each other and the process," head coach Sandrine Krul said.
Santa Barbara jumped out to an early 23-4 lead in the first quarter and never looked back.
"We had 59 team rebounds and 31 assists. That is a credit to each player on the team working on the little things that matter in a game," Krul said. "And it was our lowest turnover total at 15."
Four players finished with double-digit points for the Vaqueros. Mariia Shtykova was the leading scorer with 14 points, while Kaylee Lawson and Camargo had 13 each, and Kenedy Nutter finished with 12.
Aariah Fox contributed five rebounds, five assists, and four steals. Siena Hoban added eight rebounds and seven assists, while Isis Poteet chipped in eight points, seven rebounds, and three blocks.
"After the Ventura College win, multiple players asked to watch one-on-one film with me to learn how to be more productive on offense and defense," Krul said. "It was awesome to see those players perform very well tonight on both ends."
The Vaqueros improved to 15-4 on the year, including 3-1 in conference play, and climbed to No. 14 in the CCCWCBA State Poll released Jan. 13.
"This team doesn't premeditate who they play. They stick to the game plan and work the game plan," Krul said. "I'm telling you, a special group."
Santa Barbara will return to action Wednesday at Allan Hancock.
