FULLERTON, Calif. – Santa Barbara City College used key baskets and strong rebounding to secure a 67-56 victory over Fullerton College on the second day of the Fullerton College Holiday Crossover.
It was a hard-fought game from the tipoff. The Vaqueros finished the first quarter with a 16-13 lead, thanks in part to Kenedy Nutter sinking a 3-pointer and two free throws.
At the end of the second quarter, Kaylee Bosetti skipped a pass to Sierra Jewell, who hit a 3-pointer to give Santa Barbara a 31-29 lead at halftime.
"It was like a playoff game," head coach Sandrine Krul said. "The atmosphere was electric."
The Vaqueros relied on their strengths in the second half to extend their lead. They outrebounded the Hornets 42-34 and shot 5-for-9 from beyond the arc, compared to Fullerton's 2-for-16 performance.
"Whenever we called someone's number from the bench, they got a key offensive rebound or hit a three," Krul said. "Our entire team was locked into the game plan. When they believe in each other and know that when they step on the court, we are a team that competes for 40 minutes, that's what we did tonight."
Amarisse Camargo contributed five points and four rebounds off the bench.
Isis Poteet led all scorers with 21 points and added eight rebounds, two assists, three steals, and two blocks.
Bosetti finished with 14 points, six rebounds, and six assists. "Bosetti played like a true scoring and facilitating point guard," Krul said. "Tonight was her best all-around game. She was stellar on both ends of the floor."
The Vaqueros aim to head into the holiday break on a high note when they face Porterville College at 3 p.m.
