Pirates sweep past Lasers on the road

IRVINE -- The Orange Coast College women's volleyball team picked up a solid win against longtime rival, Irvine Valley College, sweeping past the Lasers in three sets on Friday night (25-15, 25-20, 25-16) inside the IVC gym.

Freshman outside hitter Nika Safavi had another monster game for the Pirates (17-2, 9-1 in the Orange Empire Conference) with 19 kills, 19 digs and five aces to go along with a pair of blocks.  Kennedy Cutler added 10 kills and eight blocks, while Caprie Troccoli and Scarlet Ray each contributed four kills and a combined five total blocks.

Setter Jordan Packer dished out 33 assists and had four aces, while Sophia Wirtzer and Caroline Vasquez each notched nine digs.

With the win, the Pirates -- ranked No. 13 in the state and eighth in Southern California -- continue to hold their spot atop the OEC Standings with Saddleback (8-1), Riverside (8-2) and Cypress (7-3) close behind.

OCC will play again on Wednesday at Riverside City College, beginning at 6 p.m., looking to return the favor on the Tigers, who beat OCC in five sets back on Sept. 27 inside the Peterson Gym (16-25, 25-19, 25-15, 23-25, 15-12).

The next home match for the Pirates will take place on Friday, Nov. 8 against Cypress College, beginning at 6 p.m.
