Red-hot start continues for Pirates following 12-7 win over Tigers

COSTA MESA -- The historic start for the Orange Coast College women's water polo teams continues in 2021 as the Pirates improved to 10-1 overall with a 12-7 win over visiting Riverside City College on Wednesday at the OCC Aquatics Pavilion.

Delaney Lewellyn had four goals and three steals to lead the way for the Pirates (10-1, 1-0 in the Orange Empire Conference), while Destiny Hernandez, Faith Cuevas and Journey Werner contributed two goals each. Rachel Sherman contributed a goal and a team-high four assists, while Kendall Chrisman added a goal of her own.

OCC's 12 goals were more than enough support for goalie Annabelle Sherman, who came up big with 15 saves for OCC, winners of eight in a row.

The Pirates pounced on the Tigers right from the opening drop of the ball. Lewellyn's first goal of the contest came just over a minute into the contest, followed by a goal from Werner and a tally from Cuevas as Coast grabbed a 3-0 lead after the opening quarter. Sherman was big in goal during those opening eight minutes, stopping all five shots that came her way.

Riverside (8-7, 1-2) got to within two at 5-3 before the Pirates pulled away from the Tigers with a 7-1 run that spanned the third quarter and half of the fourth quarter, putting OCC ahead to stay.

Coast will take on Citrus College on Friday at 11:20 a.m. in the Cerritos College Mini-Tournament before returning to OCC on Wednesday against Santa Ana, beginning at 4 p.m.
