Pirates conquer two road wins
COSTA MESA -- The Orange Coast College women's volleyball team took to the road this past week and came home with a pair of nonconference wins over Rio Hondo (3-0) and Santa Monica (3-1) to improve to 8-1 overall.
In OCC's win over Rio Hondo on Sept. 13, (25-11, 25-14, 25-17), Joey Payan led the way with 13 kills on just 20 attempts to go along with four digs and a pair of block assists. Caprie Troccoli added six kills, as did Nika Safavi, while Jordan Packer dished out 37 assists.
In the win over Santa Monica, Coast overcame a Game 1 hiccup before rolling to a 17-25, 25-17, 25-16, 25-16 win. Safavi led the way with 13 kills, while Troccoli added 11 and Kennedy Cutler hammered down eight. Packer again paced the offense with 32 assists, while the defense was anchored by libero Caroline Vasquez with 12 digs, with Cutler close behind with 11.
The Pirates will begin Orange Empire Conference play on Friday at Santiago Canyon, beginning at 6 p.m. before returning to the Peterson Gym on Wednesday, Oct. 25 against Irvine Valley, also at 6 p.m.
