Fletes Walk-off Lifts Vikings to 4-3 Win over De Anza

Samantha Fletes' walkoff single in the bottom of the seventh scored Janelle McAfee to help the West Valley softball team escape with a 4-3 win over rival De Anza Tuesday afternoon. Trailing 3-2, the Vikings (3-3) opened the seventh with walks to Haley Walker and McAfee. Walker would score on a Maddy Lucey fielder's choice to even it at 3-3. Alexandra Pussich lofted a pop-up to short-left that was dropped by De Anza SS Danielle Pati to load the bases and set the stage for the Fletes single to left-center two batters later.

Courtney Coombs scored the game's first run after doubling to lead off the third, stealing third and coming home on Siobhan Taylor's sacrifice fly. The Dons (1-8) erupted for three runs on three hits in the top of the 5th to grab a 3-1 lead. Lucey led off the 6th with a double and would come home on a Fletes RBI single up the middle to pull the Vikings to within 3-2.

Fletes ended the afternoon 3-4 with two RBI, and Reina Maldonado went the distance, giving up five hits and striking out two, to earn the win in the circle. West Valley hosts Diablo Valley (4-0) in a battle of the Vikings Saturday (2/10) Game times are noon and 2:00pm.
