
The VC women's basketball team bounced back in a big way Wednesday, routing Oxnard 93-29 at the Condors' Nest. Milan Garcia led three players with 20-plus points with 26 while Sam McKenzie and Alexa Coubal totaled 23 and 20 points, respectively. Coubal added 18 rebounds and Aiyana Gonzalez pulled down 19 boards with eight points. Charnelle Nichols added 11 points in the victory.
After taking an early 3-2 lead, the Pirates exploded for 21 straight points over the next 10 minutes of play for a commanding lead. Garcia made three 3-pointers during the run, punctuating it with back-to-back makes from beyond the arc for a 24-2 lead with 8:01 left in the second quarter. Ventura continued to dominate through the end of the period with Coubal netting six of the final eight points of the stanza for a 44-11 halftime lead.
Coubal started the third quarter where she left off before intermission with an old-fashioned 3-point play and McKenzie netted two scores. Nichols sank a three to expand the lead to 54-11 before Gonzalez hit a pair of field goals and Danielle Salazar scored a two for a 17-0 start to the stanza. VC led 68-19 after three periods and continued to expand their margin in the final 10 minutes of play.
McKenzie handed out six assists and Coubal dropped four dimes for VC. Salazar grabbed eight rebounds and McKenzie had six boards.
Ventura next heads to Los Angeles Mission College on Saturday Feb. 1 before hosting Moorpark on Wednesday Feb. 5.
