Soler's Late Goal Pushes Canyons Past Bakersfield 2-1

BAKERSFIELD — College of the Canyons sophomore Sofia Soler scored for her side in the 89th minute to push the Cougars past host Bakersfield College by a 2-1 score on Tuesday.
The goal was Soler's third of the season and came unassisted while giving Canyons (6-3, 2-1) its second victory in Western State Conference (WSC), South Division play. The Cougars had previously lost a 1-0 affair at Citrus College on Oct. 4.
COC's opening score came in the 18th minute off the foot of sophomore Kiana Madera to give the Cougs an early 1-0 advantage.
That score held true until Bakersfield's Emily Vincent tied the game at 1-1 in the 32nd minute with an assist credited to Mayson Saffouri.
The two sides continued to do battle throughout the match with Canyons racking up 18 shots compared to just four for the Renegades (4-5-1, 1-2). COC also earned six corner kicks with just one for Bakersfield.
Soler's game winner sent the Cougars home in victorious fashion and improved its road record to 3-2 for the season.
COC goalkeeper Hayley Bench (6-1) earned the win and was credited with one save.
Canyons is back home 6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 11 vs. conference opponent West L.A. College with that match scheduled to be broadcast to fans free of charge via YouTube on the Cougars Sports Network.
