
VC's doubles pair of Rafael Matias and Julian Tellez finished the 2024 season Sunday in the 3C2A State Doubles Final Four at The Ojai Tournament. The Pirates' men's tennis team, meanwhile, was awarded the Gorham Cup for the overall California Community College team champion during the four day of singles and doubles play to close the season.
Matias, a freshman, and Tellez, a sophomore, battled the top pair from Glendale in the state semifinals. The Vaqueros took the first set 6-2. Matias and Tellez attempted to come back in the second set and led 4-1 before their opponents came back to win the final five games to win the set and clinch the match.
Meanwhile, the Pirate team was honored by The Ojai following Sunday's competition. VC was awarded the Gorham Cup by the tournament for the outstanding California Community College team over the four days of singles and doubles play. Ventura made up a quarter of all the qualifiers in the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds in singles and doubles. Robinson Pelluault advanced to the singles quarterfinals while Cody Ray Emery played in the semifinal round. In doubles, Emery and Lucas Abreu were quarterfinalists while Matias and Tellez played in the semi's. It is the first time the Pirates have earned the Cup since 2013.
