Despite shooting 49 percent from the floor, 50 percent from three and 77 percent from the free throw line, the Pirates' men's basketball team dropped a 103-84 decision to San Bernardino Valley on the final day of the Hypland Classic Saturday at Riverside. Jeremiah Wilson netted 23 points with six boards to lead the way while Kevin Hymes totaled 17 points in the effort. Bo Dolinsek had 13 points, seven rebounds and five assists and Kam'Ron Cigar also reached double-figures with 14 for Ventura (6-7).
For the second straight game the Pirates jumped out early and led 5-2 on K. Cigar's three and Hymes' made jumper. The games was then tied at 8-8 and 11-11 before the Wolverines began to assert control.
VC kept things close, however, beginning with Doninsek's 4-point play with 15:23 on the clock to keep the Pirates within 17-15. Elijah Brown made two free throws for a 23-19 deficit and K. Cigar's jumper maintained the distance, 30-26, with 8:16 remaining in the first half.
A 13-0 run by SBVC followed, however, and Ventura trailed 54-38 at halftime.
Despite their best efforts, the Pirates could not make up much ground in the final 20 minute of play. Hymes recorded 13 second-half points on 4-6 shooting from the floor and hitting all five of his free throw attempts, and Wilson totaled 10 in the period but VC ultimately dropped the 103-84 decison.
The Pirates will return to the Athletic Event Center on Tuesday Dec 10 to face Bakersfield. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 pm.
