SYLMAR — College of the Canyons was the victim of a heartbreaking 49-47 road loss at L.A. Mission College on Saturday, with the Cougars coming up just short after nearly pulling off a 10-point fourth quarter comeback.
Canyons (2-5) had been looking to get back in the win column following a string of three straight losses. The shorthanded Cougars employed a seven-player rotation with just four points coming off the bench.
COC freshmen Mia Ceja and Vivianna Alvarado tied for the game high with 16 points each, providing a bright spot for a Cougars squad that shot under 30 percent for the game.
Kiana Postchy returned to the lineup and finished with seven points, three rebounds, two steals and a block to provide a spark on the defensive end.
Ceja recorded two assists and pulled down five rebounds in the game to slot just behind Alissa Saridin's team-high seven boards. Janise Benbo finished with six rebounds, a block and steal in her 12 minutes of action.
L.A. Mission (3-2) used the victory to snap a two-game skid of its own. The Eagles received 13 points and eight rebounds from Lily Cornejo to lead the way. Krystal Pineda scored eight points alongside eight boards to provide additional support.
LAMC won the rebounding edge 40-30 while forcing the Cougars into 13 turnovers.
