Patron Fans Eight as Cougs Down Allan Hancock 3-1
By Jesse Muñoz/COC Sports Information Director
SANTA MARIA — Freshman Oscar Patron pitched seven shutout innings to earn his first win as College of the Canyons traveled to Allan Hancock College for a 3-1 road victory on Saturday.
Canyons (2-2) used the occasion to even up its season record after losing 7-4 to Ventura College on Friday. COC has alternated wins and losses across its first four games with those totals also including a road win at Saddleback College back on Jan. 27.
The Cougars pushed across runs in the fourth and sixth innings before Domenik Cervantes added an insurance run in the ninth to put Canyons ahead 3-0.
Canyons scored first when Colin Yeaman came around on a wild pitch in the fourth inning. In the sixth, Yeaman doubled down the right field line to bring home Charlie Rocca for a 2-0 advantage. Cervantes' RBI came in the form of a single down the left field line that plated Jake Schwart.
But it was the performance of the southpaw Patron that put COC back in the win column.
The freshman out of Kennedy High School tossed the first seven innings and limited the Allan Hancock (1-3) lineup to just three hits while fanning eight batters. He also hit a batter but remained unscathed in the box score.
Tyler Biggs pitched the final two frames to earn the save, his first of the season. The Bulldogs were able to get on the board with a solo home run off Biggs in the bottom of the ninth for the 3-1 final score.
