College of the Canyons suffered a 59-40 home loss to Chaffey College on Saturday after a slow start proved too much to overcame for a second straight outing.
Canyons (2-4) has lost three straight but continues to show an ability to remain competitive down the stretch despite falling behind in the early going.
On Saturday, Chaffey (4-3) opened up a 20-12 advantage as the Cougars shot just 4-of-12 across the first frame and was outrebounded 11-1. Jenny Sanchez scored six points and Mia Ceja had four in the quarter to try to keep pace with the Panthers.
It was more of the same in the second as Chaffey outscored the Cougars 17-7 and headed to the halftime locker room with a comfortable 37-19 lead. COC received four points in the quarter from Alissa Saridin, who provided a presence despite battling an illness. A three-pointer from Ceja also provided a bit of damage control.
Ceja eventually ended things with a game-high 17 points after finishing 10-of-12 from the foul line. She added five rebounds, three assists and two steals in the game. Vivianna Alvarado scored 10 points in the contest to represent the next highest total for the Cougars.
COC finally found a slight edge in a low-scoring fourth quarter but wasn't able to make up all the needed ground.
Chaffey saw three starters in double figures with a team-high 16 points coming from Ty Peters.
Earlier in the week the Cougars fell in a 62-50 final score to visiting Riverside City College. In that contest COC trailed 21-5 after the first quarter but managed to battle back in a well-played second half that kept Canyons in contention.
The Cougars will be on the road Saturday, Nov. 30 at L.A. Mission College for a 5 p.m. start time.
