
VC's No. 1 singles player Cody Ray Emery advanced to the semifinal round of the 3C2A State Championships before bowing out Saturday while the Pirates No. 2 doubles pair of Rafael Matias and Julian Tellez qualified for Sunday's state doubles semifinals at The Ojai Tournament.
Emery faced teammate Robinson Pelluault in the quarterfinal round Saturday morning, moving to the Final Four with a 6-2, 6-1 victory. In the semifinal round, he fell to Glendale's No. 1 player 6-1, 6-2.
In the afternoon, Emery and Lucas Abreu dropped their quarterfinal match against a duo from American River, 6-2, 3-6, [10-6].
Matias and Tellez advanced to the state Final Four with a narrow come-from-behind triumph over a team from Bakersfield, 2-6, 7-6 (7-5), [10-8].
The Pirates No. 2 will play on the final day of the season on Sunday at The Ojai. Matias and Tellez will face off against a team from Glendale at 8:30 am in the semifinals at Libby Park in Ojai with the state championship match scheduled for 2:30 pm.
