
The Pirates' No. 1 duo of Autumn Rojelio and Bryce Swain took second place on the final day of the Western State Conference Pairs Tournament in Santa Monica Saturday. Meanwhile, VC's No. 2 duo of Alba Romanos Gracia and Kylie Ibbotson placed sixth in the tournament as both teams qualified for the 3C2A Southern California Regionals May 3 and 4.
Rojelio and Swain began the day with a 21-14, 21-11 victory in the quarterfinal round against a team from Santa Barbara. They continued the day with a 21-18, 21-13 triumph over Moorpark's No. 1 team in the semifinal. The duo dropped their first set against SBCC's top team in the finals, 21-16, and trailed 19-7 in the second set when an injury kept VC from continuing the match.
Meanwhile, Romanos Gracia and Ibbotson dropped their quarterfinal match to the top team from Santa Monica, 21-14, 21-19 before coming back to defeat Bakersfield 12-21, 22-20, 23-21 to move int the fifth/sixth place match. The Pirates' No. 2's fell to Moorpark's second team 21-17, 21-17 to finish sixth in the tournament.
The Pirate team will return to action on Tuesday April 30 hosting a Southern California Regional match against San Diego Miramar and Rio Hondo with a berth in the state team tournament on the line. VC takes on RHC at 10:00 am before battling Miramar at 12:00 pm at the Ventura Harbor Cove Courts.
The Pirates' top two pairs teams will play in the SoCal Regional Tournament on May 3 and 4.
